Training Solutions versus
Database Management Capability

Your options, a comparison of online, intranet and CD/DVD based media:

Many businesses are expanding their training programs to take advantage of new technology. Computer based training can enhance educational material and eliminate problems related to distance and availability of training personnel.

Within the area of computer training there are a number of options, each with their own advantages.

Intranet Training:

Intranet training delivers the high quality media of CD solutions together with the ease of result tracking of web-based training.

Intranet solutions however have one disadvantage, location. An intranet based training system is fixed physically in a place, available only on the machines connected to that network.

Summary:

In short all computer based training offers advantages in terms of time and personnel requirements. Web and CD solutions are flexible in terms of location and distance. CD and intranet options can contain rich media, high quality video and sound. Web and intranet training provides reliable and extensive user tracking and record keeping facilities.

WAITTA AWARD RESULTS

For the second consecutive year,
Cell-media was selected as a finalist
in the prestigious Western Australian Information Technology and Telecommunications Awards…. Service Delivery and Training category! This was held at the Hyatt Regency Perth Grand Ballroom, and was hosted once again by well-known identity Sam Gannon.

Our entry, the St John Ambulance Senior First Aid Training package on CD ROM, which was rolled out nationally last month, received wide spread acclaim and provoked some excellent feedback and comments from the 500+ awards finalists who attended this prestigious awards presentation.

Whilst the winner was WESTNET, (an Internet service provider), I believe this would have gone down to the wire, as it must have been difficult for the judging panel to consider a service delivery entry, (Westnet), as against the nationally based training package entry from Cell-media!

We will be back again next year that’s for certain!

The AUS Industry Safety Show -
Burswood Dome…Report

The AUS Industry Safety show was held at the Burswood Dome from April 13 – 16.

Whilst the number of visitors was somewhat disappointing (Final numbers not yet in, but estimates are around 3500 over the 4 days), Cell-media was unique in that it was once again the only Industrial Multimedia Company on display.

The graphic nature and variety of work we projected onto a large display screen drew in not only the visitors to our stand, but also many of the business owners from the other display stands who were looking for graphic 3D animated ways to market their products.

Perhaps we could assist your business with some ideas and concepts on how you could take advantage of 21st Century multimedia techniques to improve your marketing and sales material, or tenders and proposals.

DATABASE MANAGEMENT OPTIONS IN MULTIMEDIA TRAINING AND INDUCTION PACKAGES

Cell-media can now incorporate database management features with their training and induction packages produced on CD ROM, DVD, and most particularly for WEB based training. The amount and versatility of this depends on the format selected, however firstly…

What is a database management system?

I found this interesting definition on a web site, and I have extracted some relevant parts from it…

“A collection of programs that enables you to store, modify, and extract information from a database. There are many different types of DBMS’s, ranging from small systems that run on personal computers, to huge systems that run on mainframes….”

“…. Most DBMS’s include a report writer program that enables you to output data in the form of a report. Many DBMS’s also include a graphics co mponent that enables you to output information in the form of graphs and charts…..”

Developed as a part of a training and/or induction package, database management allows you to record valuable user data, and retrieve the data when and as required, quickly an easily.

Database management in training and inductions provides an opportunity to record user interaction and statistics such as:

· Name, ID,
· Company name (For contractors)
· Date of use
· Time taken
· Results of Quizzes including number of time questions missed, time taken etc

Commonly used databases can also do the following:

· Report and up-grade records in other databases
· Provide alerts or “flags” for re-training in the event the induction or training of an individual or individuals or com- panies has expired, or where
changes to procedures have been
made.
· Print hardcopies and/or email results
to a pre-determined recipient.

Online Training:

Distance and timing issues are completely eliminated by web based training solutions. Users can complete training, undergo simulations and be assessed, wherever and whenever is most convenient. Assessment results can be recorded in databases that track all personnel and their training status.

The limitation of online training is bandwidth. Video must be in small windows and sound will be of low quality or not used altogether. Options on the site for dial up or broadband users help reduce this problem but it remains a factor until further advances in Internet connection speeds are made.

CD/DVD Training:

CD based training packages can contain far more video and higher quality sound than online equivalents, thus delivering a very rich and immersive educational experience. CDs can be used wherever the user needs them, provided a CD can be delivered to that location. CDs eliminate loading times associated with web solutions. DVD’s can provide all these benefits in greater quantity, lots of very high quality video and sound.

The limitation of CDs is data tracking. Options can be provided to print certificates, email results or to connect to the internet to record assessments in a database. (Email only available of course if the user has access to the internet when undertaking the induction or training.
